Chandler originated in the USA and Fernor in France. Their leafing and flowering patterns differ. Select using local frost records, temperatures and pollination compatibility, not altitude alone.
How do container-grown and bare-root saplings differ?
Container-grown saplings travel with soil around the roots. Bare-root plants are lifted during dormancy and their roots must stay moist and protected until planting.
When should walnut saplings be planted?
Plant bare-root saplings during dormancy, generally November–March. Container-grown plants allow more flexibility, but avoid frozen or waterlogged soil and extreme heat, and provide irrigation.
